Nick McGlashan’s Crew Battles Challenges While Jake Anderson Prepares for His Maiden Voyage

Out on the crab grounds, boss Nick McGlashan found himself in a tough spot as critical equipment broke down mid-operation. “This ram went out on us, and it’s really the only repair I can think of that’s ever truly shut us down,” Nick explained. Only days earlier, the hydraulics on the launcher had blown out, but now a missing part left the crew scrambling to improvise. Frustration mounted as Nick addressed the oversight. “Zach, this is your responsibility,” he said, calling out his teammate for the lapse.

Despite the setback, the crew rallied together, taking charge of the repairs with determination. “It looks good. I think we fixed it,” said one crew member as the team assessed their progress. “We’re back in business,” Nick declared. With the ram fixed, bait secured, and the promise of fish ahead, the crew was eager to resume operations.

Across the harbor, a new chapter began for Jake Anderson, who was stepping into his role as the captain of the Saga for the first time. Reflecting on his journey, Jake admitted, “If you’d told me 10 or 12 years ago that I’d be having a baby and working as a captain, I’d have told you to get out of here.” Welcomed by veteran relief captain Ray Flerchinger, Jake expressed his mix of nerves and excitement. “I’m more nervous than anything, especially when I leave the dock,” he shared. Ray reassured him, “If you weren’t nervous, I’d be worried.”

With the crew ready and Jake eager to prove himself, the Saga prepared to launch. “Let’s go fill her up and catch some crab,” Jake said as the team fueled up and loaded supplies.

Meanwhile, at Dutch Harbor, tensions simmered between rival crews. Captain Wild Bill of the Cape Caution sought payback for a prank pulled by Sig Hansen and the crew of the Northwestern last season. In a covert operation, Wild Bill masterminded an effort to chain the Northwestern to the dock. “This is a first for me,” he said with a sly grin as his team bolted the chain in place. “Careful what you wish for—they started this.”

The next morning, as Sig and his crew prepared to depart, they were met with an unexpected delay. “They chained us to the dock!” Sig exclaimed, half-amused and half-irritated. “Was that you?” he shouted toward Wild Bill, who responded with a laugh. “What do you think? You stole my boat; I made sure you couldn’t leave the dock!” The crews exchanged banter and laughter, signaling that while the rivalry was fierce, it was also steeped in mutual respect and humor.

As night fell, the hustle of the season continued. Boats were fueled, bait was prepped, and the crews were ready to face the challenges of the Bering Sea. For some, it was a return to familiar waters; for others, like Jake Anderson, it was the start of a new adventure. Through it all, the determination and resilience of the crab fishing community shone brightly, proving that no setback or prank could dim their resolve to succeed.
