Deadliest Catch Fans Bash Handling of Nick Mavar Memorial

This past week on Deadliest Catch, the Discovery Channel reality TV show took a moment to pay tribute to the late Nick Mavar, a former star of the series. Nick tragically passed away last year, and the show dedicated a memorial segment to honor him. While this tribute touched some fans, many others were left feeling that the show mishandled the memorial and disrespected Nick’s legacy.

Nick Mavar, who passed away in June 2024 at the age of 59, was a longtime deckhand on the F/V Northwestern. He appeared in nearly 100 episodes of Deadliest Catch throughout his career. As one of the main members of Captain Sig Hansen’s crew, Nick played a significant role, particularly in managing the mechanical equipment. Although Nick was a vital part of the show, he left in 2021 after an emergency appendectomy and never returned.

Some Reddit users feel that the memorial dedicated to Nick was insufficient, especially in comparison to tributes given to other cast members who were on the show for fewer episodes. One of the main points of contention among fans was that Nick’s tribute seemed to be far less elaborate than those given to other Deadliest Catch stars who died under tragic circumstances.

As several Reddit posts mentioned, Deadliest Catch also offered emotional goodbyes to Nick McGlashan and Malan Reyes, both of whom passed away at much younger ages. Nick McGlashan died at 33 following a drug overdose in 2021, while Malan Reyes died at 38 from a drug overdose. Many fans felt it was wrong that these tributes seemed more substantial than the one given to Nick Mavar, who had a long history with the show but passed away from a heart attack.

In addition to Nick, other Deadliest Catch stars who passed away include Todd Kittiling, who died in an accident on the F/V Patricia Lee, and Captain Phil Harris, who passed away following a stroke. Fans pointed out that the tributes for those who died from drug overdoses appeared to be more heartfelt than the one dedicated to Nick, who was an essential member of the Northwestern crew.

So, what are your thoughts on Nick Mavar’s tribute on Deadliest Catch? Do you think it was enough, or did the show fall short in honoring him? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
