According to the legend, Captain Kidd’s crew hid a treasure worth 2 million pounds on the island before Kidd’s death in 1701. The first known mention of the treasure came in 1856, when Daniel McGinnis and his crew reportedly discovered a depression in the ground that seemed to match descriptions of Kidd’s hidden treasure.

**The Search Continues**

Despite decades of exploration, the Money Pit remains an enduring mystery. In 1799, McGinnis and two companions began digging and found layers of flagstones, wood platforms, and evidence of strange markings. Later excavations uncovered a large stone with symbols on it, along with charcoal, putty, and coconut fibers. However, the pit filled with water at 60 feet, complicating further efforts to retrieve the treasure.

In the 19th century, several companies, including the Truro Company, re-excavated the hole, but they, too, were thwarted by flooding. Most recently, a series of boreholes drilled into the original shaft reached 86 feet before also flooding.
