ALASKA – Chris McCully and his team are pushing through a demanding day in the Bering Sea, as the season’s first half comes to a close. With the pump engine still holding out and the clock ticking, the crew is determined to make every minute count, especially as McCully nears the three-hour dive mark. The stakes are high, and McCully’s team is working hard to pull in as much gold as possible before the day ends.
As McCully dives deeper than 33 feet, he must perform a safety stop at 15 feet for three minutes to eliminate excess nitrogen from his body. “I’m going to go ahead and idle down while you do your safety stop,” his crew member calls out. Despite the mandatory pause, McCully is ready to keep the ball rolling. “I’m pretty good down there, pretty consistent gold most of the time,” he says, his confidence growing as the dive progresses.
The team continues their work, and the gold starts to add up. “Great job, dude,” one of the crew members cheers, recognizing the successful work done so far. With the day winding down, McCully takes charge, making sure to wrap things up strong. “Gold time, go!” he calls as they head back to the harbor, eager to see what they’ve collected.
By the time McCully reaches the harbor, the team is ready for the big reveal. The excitement builds as the gold is poured out into the clean-up box. “Heck yeah, you know every scoop I pour in there has gold in it. That’s a good sign,” McCully remarks, clearly pleased with the haul so far.
As the first half of the season draws to a close, McCully is determined to maintain his lead as the gold count leader. “Look, it’s already filing up,” McCully observes, as the pile of gold continues to grow. “I think we’re making money like a politician at this point.” His optimism is evident, especially as he anticipates the results of the day’s work.
The team weighs the gold carefully, and the results are impressive. “So here we go, let’s weigh this thing out,” McCully announces. The scale reads: 439 grams. When converted, that equals 14.1 Troy ounces, worth more than $32,000. This marks the biggest cleanout of the winter season so far, a major milestone for McCully’s team.
With this impressive haul, McCully is heading into the second half of the season with momentum. His goal is to continue this success and reach a critical milestone: the purchase of a new motor to keep his operations running smoothly throughout the remainder of the season. “If I get 8 ounces off of this cleanout, I’d be really happy,” McCully says, knowing that this will allow him to continue his pursuit of even more gold.
As the team heads into the back half of the season, McCully is looking stronger than ever, poised to maintain his lead and continue racking up gold on his way to a successful winter season.
