A True Test at Sea: Mandy Hansen’s Final Days on the Northwestern

Aboard the 125-foot Northwestern, the stakes are high, and the pressure is even higher. Captain Sig Hansen and his crew push forward, tackling the final days of their season.

“This stuff’s got lots of soak on it now,” Sig remarks as they close in on their next string. “Let’s hope that it does something.”

The goal is clear: haul in as much crab as possible before the storm intensifies, with winds expected to hit 45 knots. Among the crew is Sig’s daughter, greenhorn Mandy Hansen, who is preparing for her final days on her father’s boat.

The Captain’s Challenge

“I just don’t want her to walk away from this experience not truly knowing what it is,” Sig says. “We’re here to teach, but I want it real.”

Until now, Mandy has been given a somewhat softer introduction to the brutal life at sea. With her father, uncles, and crewmates watching out for her, she has had an easier path compared to the average greenhorn. But that is about to change.

“We’ve coddled her enough,” Sig acknowledges. “But there’s a point when it’s too much, and that’s not fair.”

With Mandy’s flight home already scheduled, Sig is determined to make sure she gets the full experience before she leaves. To do that, she must endure her first all-nighter at sea.

“Mandy, we’re gonna do an all-nighter,” Sig announces. “So get ready for your first real grind.”

The 48-Hour Grind

The prospect of hauling pots for 48 hours straight would shake even the most seasoned deckhands, but Mandy is up for the challenge.

“She hasn’t done an all-nighter yet,” Sig says. “Now, we gotta do what we gotta do.”

Ten hours into the non-stop grind, exhaustion begins to take its toll.

“She’s so tired right now,” a crewmember observes. “She hasn’t slept much the last couple of nights.”

Yet, despite the fatigue and aching muscles, Mandy pushes forward.

“She’s sincere about wanting to be here,” Sig says. “So now, we turn it up a notch.”

Pushing Beyond the Limits

Forty hours into the grind, the crew finally gets a moment to breathe. Mandy, though exhausted, keeps moving forward.

“She’s starting to feel it now,” Sig notes. “I know exactly what she’s going through. Those little pains just get bigger and bigger.”

The last lap of the grueling stretch is in sight, but Mandy is determined to see it through.

“She’s got willpower,” Sig says with admiration. “You just can’t buy that—it’s either there or it’s not.”

As the final pots are hauled, exhaustion is written all over Mandy’s face, but there’s also something else: pride.

“She’s learned a lot,” Sig reflects. “Even though I see her as my little girl, she’s a big girl now. She gets it.”

With the last trap secured and the journey nearing its end, Sig finally breaks character, letting his pride show.

“I’m proud of you, Mandy,” he says. “You did good.”

A small but sincere “thank you” is all Mandy can muster. The grueling experience has tested her in ways she never imagined, but she has proven herself worthy of the Hansen name.

Out here, respect isn’t given—it’s earned. And Mandy Hansen just earned hers.
