While American Pickers mastermind Mike Wolf has proven himself vastly knowledgeable in virtually every corner of the antique market, he has a particular affinity for vintage motorcycles. In fact, his desire to buy, restore, and eventually resell antique bikes has led to some of the priciest picks seen on the long-running reality series.
During one Season 9 episode of American Pickers, Wolf dropped what was then the largest amount of money the team had ever spent on a rare antique motorcycle—the Royal Pioneer. Wolf and his former co-star Frank Fritz tracked the bike down at a South Florida home. The motorcycle, a 1910 Royal Pioneer, appeared to be little more than a frame and engine. Mike was eager to acquire it and offered $35,000. However, the owner countered at $60,000, and they eventually settled on $55,000.
Wolf’s instincts paid off, as he later flipped the bike for a whopping $100,000. This Royal Pioneer instantly ranked among the coolest vehicles the American Pickers team had ever found. It’s unclear how much Wolf invested in restoring the bike, but with an upfront cost of $55,000, the profit margin might have been slim, even with the $100,000 sale.
The rarity of the Royal Pioneer is significant; only 500 were ever made, and only four are known to still exist today. In 1910, the factory that produced them was bankrupted by a massive fire, making these motorcycles incredibly sought after. Jersey John, Wolf’s go-to antique bike expert, described Royal Pioneers as “Holy Grails” in the vintage motorcycle market, helping to convince Fritz that the bike was worth the investment. Given its scarcity, the $55,000 paid by the American Pickers team feels like a steal.
