The Battle Continues: Storms, Setbacks, and Sleepless Nights on the Cape Caution

“GU! Not letting up. Heads up, heads up, heads up! Big curler—wow!”

The warning bellows across the deck as towering waves, as high as a three-story building, batter the Cape Caution.

“Everybody okay? Keep your eyes open. Watch the rail, guys—watch the rail. Hold on!”

The crew braces themselves, soaked by the relentless spray.

“It’s a little wet today,” one crew member quips, trying to maintain humor amid the chaos. “I just have to stay tuned up. It’s my job.”

The grind wears on. Sore hands are a constant companion.

“You know what that’s called?” another asks. “It’s called the claw, my friend. The claw.”

Tough love follows: “Toughen up, eat some concrete. We’re going to fill this before I go in—if it kills you guys.”

But exhaustion creeps in. As the boat steams to the next string, even the captain admits, “I got the sleepies all of a sudden. That won’t do.”

The Rogue Wave Hits

While the crew and captain steal a brief respite, the storm seizes its moment.

“Yo! You guys, get up! We need to get out on deck—now!”

The urgency is palpable. A 35-foot rogue wave slams into the Cape Caution, leaving destruction in its wake.

A crew member points out the damage: “The table broke off the rim. The base piece broke again—same thing as last time.”

The storm isn’t the only culprit. Just days ago, another massive wave shattered deck boards and damaged the sorting table. The Cape Caution struggles with wear and tear that feels unrelenting.

Frustration Mounts

Captain Bill is visibly frustrated. “The deck of a crab boat should be indestructible all the time, no matter what.”

He addresses the crew’s recent lapse: “If the guys had been on deck, I wouldn’t have been drooling on myself in the chair. It would’ve been a different scenario.”

Crew members defend their actions. “We grabbed a bite to eat, put on dry clothes, and came back. Nobody gave an order to sleep.”

But the captain fires back: “I didn’t tell anyone to go to bed. The idea was to eat and head back out. This miscommunication cost us hours.”

Despite the frustration, Captain Bill takes some responsibility. “I do stay awake a lot so they can sleep, and I’m fine with it—until they take it for granted.”

Jerry-Rigged Solutions and Hope

With little sleep and mounting pressure, the crew cobbles together makeshift repairs.

“This isn’t perfect, but it’ll have to work,” one mutters, securing damaged equipment.

The crew pushes forward, hoisting pots and hoping for a good haul.

“Just add crab,” the captain muses. “All this frustration could disappear with a solid catch.”

As the pots come up, everyone watches, weary but hopeful. Once again, the Cape Caution battles through adversity, proving that the grind of crab fishing is as much about resilience as it is about luck.
