Frank Fritz: The Tragic Final Years of the American Pickers Star

Frank Fritz, once a beloved star of American Pickers, faced a battle far more difficult than any treasure hunt in his final years. After suffering a severe stroke in 2022, Frank was left partially paralyzed and reliant on around-the-clock care. His antique shop, once a source of pride, fell into disrepair. Despite a heartfelt reunion with his co-star Mike Wolfe, Frank’s health rapidly declined, and by September 2024, he passed away at the age of 60, marking a tragic end to his journey.

The Journey of American Pickers and Frank Fritz’s Role

Many fans of American Pickers were drawn to the show because it was more than just about antiques – it was about history, storytelling, and the personalities behind the picks. Mike Wolfe, one of the show’s main stars, had started picking as a young child, and Frank Fritz complemented him with his passion for antique toys and oil cans. Though Mike and Frank had opposite picking styles, they made a perfect team, with their chemistry becoming a key element of the show’s success.

As the show continued, the bond between Mike and Frank seemed to weaken. Fans noticed Frank’s absence from the show, and soon after, it became clear that it was due to serious health issues. Frank had undergone major back surgery and battled Crohn’s disease, a chronic digestive condition. The intense travel required for the show became impossible for Frank to manage, and though fans were sympathetic, rumors began circulating that there was more to his absence than just his health struggles.

A Friendship in Trouble

Frank eventually revealed in 2021 that he had been let go from the show – it wasn’t a choice he made. He also shared how he had been hurt by the lack of support from Mike during his recovery from surgery. Frank had thought of Mike as a brother, but during his most difficult times, Mike never reached out to check on him. This deepened the rift between the two, and Frank even compared their situation to being in a band where one member takes all the attention, leaving the other feeling sidelined.

Mike did respond publicly but avoided addressing the specifics of their falling out. He kept things polite and professional, acknowledging their long history and wishing Frank well. However, for many fans, Mike’s response felt like an attempt to smooth things over without truly reconciling their differences.

Frank’s Struggles with Addiction and Health

Frank had previously spoken about his struggles with alcohol, a battle that led to a 77-day rehab stint. Despite his efforts to stay sober, his past with addiction seemed to have created a distance between him and Mike. Mike subtly hinted that Frank’s recovery wasn’t progressing enough for him to return to the show, which compounded Frank’s sense of being left behind.

The Stroke and Decline

In 2022, Frank’s story took a tragic turn when he suffered a devastating stroke that left him fighting for his life. The stroke caused severe physical impairments, including the loss of movement on the right side of his body. His condition left him bedridden, unable to manage his antique store, which had once been a thriving business. The store fell into disrepair, and Frank’s condition worsened, requiring a temporary guardianship to manage his affairs.

Despite this, Frank continued to try to stay connected with his business. However, the store’s sales plummeted, and renovations were needed just to bring in some light. Frank’s physical health remained in decline as he underwent intensive physical therapy, hoping to regain some strength. By 2024, Frank was partially paralyzed and needed 24-hour care.

Reunion and Tragic Passing

In 2023, after nearly three years apart, Mike and Frank finally reunited. The emotional reunion allowed them to reflect on their years together and the impact they had on American Pickers. Mike expressed that no one could replace Frank, acknowledging his unique contributions to the show. The reunion was a moment of healing, but it was also bittersweet, as Frank’s health continued to deteriorate.

On September 30th, 2024, Frank passed away at 60. The cause of death was related to the stroke he had suffered, compounded by other health conditions. His passing marked the end of an era for American Pickers. Mike, reflecting on their many years together, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, and Danielle Colby, another member of the show’s family, posted a message honoring Frank’s legacy. She remembered his humor, his love for tattoos, and the vulnerability he occasionally showed.

The Legacy of Frank Fritz

Frank’s death left a significant void in the American Pickers community. He was more than just a co-host – his humor, passion for antiques, and easygoing nature made the show what it was. While the show continues without him, many fans will always feel that something is missing. Frank Fritz may be gone, but his legacy in the world of antiques and on American Pickers will never be forgotten.
